What is a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: a cube three feet long, three feet wide and three feet high. Container sizes refer to capacity in cubic yards, so a 20-yard holds about 20 of them.

What it costs

As a rule of thumb one pickup-truck load is about three cubic yards, so a 15-yard holds roughly five pickup loads, a 20-yard about seven and a 25-yard about eight. Those comparisons sell better than the number does.

When it comes up

Every sizing conversation. Customers do not think in cubic yards, so translating to pickup loads or to rooms of a house is what actually prevents the wrong can going out.
