What is a roll-off?
A roll-off is the rectangular open-top container most people call a dumpster. It loads and unloads by rolling along rails on the back of a hoist truck, which is why it needs a straight run of clearance to place.
What it costs
A new can is one of the biggest purchases in the business, which is why bin utilization matters: an operator who can put off one purchase by scheduling better has saved real money.
When it comes up
Sizes of 10 to 40 yards are standard, with 15, 20 and 30 common in residential work. Placement needs a long, straight run in front of the drop spot and room overhead for the hoist to tilt the can off: Budget Dumpster, for one, asks customers for about 60 feet of straight approach and 25 to 30 feet of overhead clearance.
