What we do

When someone asks ChatGPT
for a dumpster in your town, who does it name?

Usually a national directory, not you. That is changing slowly, and the work that changes it is mostly work you should be doing anyway.

Getting recommended by ChatGPT means being named inside its answer rather than in a list of links. It works, but narrowly: ChatGPT recommended about 1.2% of the business locations SOCi tracked across 2,751 multi-location brands, against 35.9% appearing in Google’s local three-pack (SOCi 2026). Expect a handful of jobs, not a flood.

The honest size of it

Forty-five percent of US consumers now use AI to find local business recommendations, up from six percent a year earlier (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, n=1,002). Real shift, and the reason this page exists.

But ChatGPT recommended about 1.2% of the business locations in SOCi's index, against a 35.9% average appearance rate in Google's local three-pack (SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index, 350,000+ locations of 2,751 multi-location brands). Anyone charging a large premium for "AI search optimization" is selling you tomorrow at today's prices.

Which engine reads which source

Google Business Profile supplies about 45% of AI citations in the services category and is the leading source for Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT leans elsewhere: Yelp is its most common source, appearing in 80% of its answers (BrightLocal AI directory sources study, August 2026).

So claiming and filling your Yelp listing is not an afterthought here; it is the single highest-leverage thing for ChatGPT specifically.

What actually moves it, in order of evidence

  1. Being reachable at all. A real problem: the site blocks AI crawlers at the hosting layer, often by a default nobody chose. ChatGPT search reads the web through OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says sites that opt out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI crawler docs). If it gets a 403, nothing else matters.
  2. Your Google profile, then Yelp and the directories that feed each engine.
  3. Facts in readable text. A controlled study of 1,885 already-cited pages found that adding JSON-LD schema did not raise AI citations on any platform it measured (Ahrefs, 2026). Your prices, service area and exclusions need to be text a reader can see, not only markup.
  4. Being mentioned elsewhere. Branded web mentions correlate with how often a brand appears in Google's AI Overviews at 0.664; backlinks only 0.218 and referring domains 0.295 (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands, 2025).

What is oversold

  • llms.txt. We ship one because it costs nothing. We have seen no evidence that it changes whether an AI names you, so we do not sell it as a lever.
  • FAQ schema for rich results. Google removed FAQ rich results in May 2026. Still useful for clarity; dead as a search feature.
  • Schema as an AI tactic. See the controlled study above. Ship it for entity clarity, not for citations.

What we will not promise

Placement. Run the same local search again and the results overlap only 20–33% on average, and a business named once comes back in about half of later runs (BrightLocal, 200,085 localized searches, September 2026). A screenshot of one good ChatGPT answer is not a deliverable, and we will not sell you one.

The number we do report every month is the map of where you rank, measured the same way each time.

What this costs

Nothing extra. It is in the $1,297. Outdooit publishes $800/mo for AI SEO on its own, with a three-month minimum. Most of that work is the local SEO we are already doing for you, and billing you twice for one job would be hard to defend.

Common questions

How do I get my dumpster rental business recommended by ChatGPT?

Let OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, read your site; OpenAI says sites that opt out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then fill out your Google Business Profile and Yelp listing, put your prices, sizes and towns in plain text, and get mentioned on other sites. Even then it is a handful of jobs, not a flood.

Does ChatGPT recommend dumpster rental companies?

Sometimes, but rarely. In SOCi’s 2026 index of 2,751 multi-location brands, ChatGPT recommended about 1.2% of the business locations tracked, against 35.9% appearing in Google’s local three-pack. In a BrightLocal study, Yelp appeared as a source in 80% of ChatGPT’s answers, so a claimed and filled Yelp listing matters more than most people expect.

Is AEO worth paying extra for?

No. It is worth doing and not worth a premium. ChatGPT recommended about 1.2% of the business locations in SOCi’s 2026 index of multi-location brands, and most of the work overlaps ordinary local SEO, so it should be included in what you already pay rather than billed as a separate line.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

Not measurably. A controlled Ahrefs study of 1,885 already-cited pages against matched controls found that adding JSON-LD did not raise AI citations on any platform it measured. Ship schema for entity clarity, not as an AI tactic, and put the facts in text a reader can see.

Can you guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT?

No, and nobody can. Run the same local search again and the results overlap only 20 to 33% on average. We will not sell you a screenshot of one good answer; what we report each month is the map scan.

What it costs

$1,297 a month for the Core package, with no setup fee. At a $375 ticket and a 40% contribution margin an extra haul leaves about $150, so $1,297 divides into nine hauls. Change either number and the answer changes. Bought one at a time at the lowest price each vendor publishes, the main pieces of Core come to about $1,155 a month — $142 less than Core. Every source is on the pricing page.
